Portland School of Ballet

The Portland School of Ballet was founded in 1980 in Portland, Maine, by Artistic Director Eugenia L. O’Brien. PSB’s mission is to provide a professional education for children and adults in the full spectrum of classical ballet while serving as a broad based educational institution for the general community. Portland School of Ballet is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

The Portland School of Ballet has an extraordinary history of excellence from its earliest beginnings. By assembling a staff of professionally qualified teachers, O’Brien has coordinated the training of pre-professional dancers who have been accepted into the most prestigious schools and summer programs.

Students have been accepted at American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet Academy, North Carolina School for the Arts, Pacific Northwest Ballet, National School of Canada, Walnut Hill, Pennsylvania Ballet, the Kirov Academy, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and other respected institutions.

Portland School of Ballet has hosted master teachers from Boston Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Ballet Opera de Bordeaux, American Ballet Theatre, and the Bolshoi Theater of Uzbekistan, just to name a few.

Because ballet is a ‘performing’ art, the Portland School of Ballet provides numerous public performance opportunities for its students. Beginning and Intermediate students perform at community events such as Portland’s annual Mayday Celebration, and the town of Kennebunk’s Mayday festivities. They have performed at the Maine Mall’s "Fall for the Arts" festival, the Kid’s First Fiesta and the Maine Adoptive Parents conference. Intermediate and Advanced students perform in our traveling Lecture - Demonstration series, bringing ballet into school systems around the region, reaching several thousand children each year.

Portland School of Ballet's advanced students perform each year in a variety of settings. They are featured performers at the Copper Beech Tree Lighting and at the Victoria Mansion Christmas Gala. Most dancers of this level audition to perform with the Portland Ballet Company, and can be seen performing in many company performances. All students are welcome to audition for Portland Ballet’s annual production of The Victorian Nutcracker.

Every June, Portland School of Ballet presents its annual Student Workshop. This performance takes place at the John Ford Theater, where Portland School of Ballet students in levels S Intro through C.O.R.P.S. present classwork and variations, demonstrating what they have learned throughout the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to see how their dancer has developed.
