The Joffrey Ballet School

The Joffrey Ballet School, located in New York City’s Greenwich Village, was founded in 1953 by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino to develop and train professional dancers. The School continues to strive for the founders’ vision of dance based on rigorous classical training that is imbued with a sense of movement, clarity and exuberant energy.

In more than fifty years of existence, the Joffrey Ballet School has remained on the forefront of American dance education. Graduates of the School have gone on to dance for major classical ballet companies, as well as for numerous modern and contemporary companies, both in the United States and abroad.

The Joffrey Ballet School is the only ballet school in New York City that offers a well-rounded dance curriculum that includes serious training in both classical ballet (technique, pointe, variations, adagio, men’s classes) and contemporary ballet (technique, improvisation, partnering), as well as modern, character, choreography, dance history, music, pilates and yoga.

Special workshops are taught by guest faculty to augment the curriculum. All dance classes have live piano accompaniment, and live cello and percussion accompaniment is used in some contemporary and modern classes.

The School offers a complete program for pre-professional students or Trainees, as well as a full curriculum for young dancers beginning at age 2. In addition, the School offers open classes both at the professional level and for adult beginners. Whether you are interested in a professional career or are simply looking to dance for fun, the Joffrey School provides a positive, nurturing learning environment for students of all levels and abilities.

The faculty at the Joffrey Ballet School consists of a celebrated international roster of instructors with many years of experience in dance pedagogy and performance. Many of our talented faculty have danced for the Joffrey Ballet and other world-class companies and/or were trained at the School. The faculty is led by Artistic Director George de la Peña, a former student of the Joffrey Ballet School and Robert Joffrey.

The Joffrey Ballet School is committed to the vision of American dance shared by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, and to developing its students to their fullest potential. Students participate in an annual production of The Nutcracker as well as a Student Choreographic Workshop and our end of the year Spring Performance.
