The Toledo Ballet

The Toledo Ballet offers all students individual attention no matter the reason they dance. What makes Toledo Ballet unique is without a doubt our faculty. Every Toledo Ballet instructor is dedicated to helping every student reach his or her highest potential through individualized instruction.

Our instructors have professional dance experience – experience that is invaluable when guiding and supporting the dreams of young dancers.

The Toledo Ballet offers successful training done by uniquely talented faculty, under the direction of Lisa Mayer Lang. Ms. Mayer currently teaches master classes for the University of Michigan's Dance and Musical Theatre Departments.

We believe learning ballet – or any form of dance – is so much more than mastering positions and memorizing steps. It is also about gaining confidence and self-esteem. Learning discipline and perseverance. Most of all, it is about getting caught up in the sheer joy that only dance can bring. We invite you to find that joy for yourself or your student and join us for a class or two.

Toledo Ballet is offering a class called Ballet for Balance for adults with imbalance challenges such as Multiple Sclerosis, ALS or vestibular disorders. Supported by Dr. Thomas Tafelski, Associate Professor, The University of Toledo Medical Center, classes will focus on posture, range of motion, strength and poise. Students will gain security and stability with exercises utilizing the ballet barre and, where applicable, move to free standing movements.

It is the only dance and movement therapy offered locally for balance challenges. In addition, Toledo Ballet has adopted a program developed in partnership between Boston Ballet and Boston Children's Hospital that has been lauded in People Magazine. The program, called Adaptive Dance, is being offered to children ages 7 and up who have Down Syndrome. This unique dance class gives children an opportunity to learn to move and dance in ways that come naturally to them.

Although the primary goal of adaptive dance classes is for the children to experience the joy of dance and music, program evaluation suggests that it has many other important benefits to participants, including improvements in coordination, fitness, balance, focus, listening, self-esteem, self-expression, rhythm and musicality.

The Toledo Ballet is dedicated to providing the highest quality of training, from the earliest stages and progressing through the pre-professional level, by blending the discipline of classical ballet with the respect for the entire spectrum of dance. Through constant development in the pursuit of artistic excellence, students are nurtured and encouraged to achieve the highest standards of artistic accomplishment. In keeping with the strong tradition of the past, these efforts culminate in producing talented individuals.

The mission of the Toledo Ballet is to increase interest and support of the arts through dance. This mission is accomplished through community education, studio instruction and major performances and the following initiatives:

  • * Establish and promote interest in dance as a fine art

  • * Present dance programs of the highest quality

  • * Organize, maintain and present the Toledo Ballet augmented by guest artists

  • * Maintain an active scholarship program for promising dancers

  • * Encourage audience development and appreciation for ballet with young people by maintaining visibility in educational settings in cooperation with the area school systems
