Working as a choreographer consists of creating dance routines and movement sequences for actors and dancers. You are going to be able to work on TV or movie performance, stage, music videos and many other public events that require organization and art, some choreographers also work as movement coaches for actors.

When becoming a choreographer you got to pick a dance style of specialization, such as:

The job of the choreographer is to work with the director to devise dance steps and routines for productions. These may be tweaking existing classic dance routines, or creating something new and fresh. Considerable research, often historical, and technical knowledge is required, as well as the ability to notate dance steps. The choreographer will usually also be deeply involved in wardrobe, set design, special effects and of course, with music. Choreographer Job Opportunities

Most choreographers want to work in classical or modern ballet, but there are opportunities for choreographers in musical theater, parades, competitions, and there are even jobs related to sports events and other outdoor displays. The recent Olympics in London showed some marvelous examples of the art of choreography for large public events. Choreographers have to maintain high physical fitness and dance skills, as they need to be able to demonstrate steps and routines as they teach the dances and routines which they have devised.

Set Design - A Necessary Part Of A Choreographer's Resume

Set design is taking on new prominence as part of a choreographer's role, with the economic challenges facing many performing arts companies. Make sure that you are prepared with an excellent portfolio of your set design work as part of your resume. In your Set Designer Resume you should include sketches and visualizations, photographs and of course video.

If you don't have a great deal of actual set design experience, then work up some ideas for a range of dance projects. For the ballet, choose something classical and something modern, for musical theater, try a new take on some old chestnut. Your ideas should incorporate sketches, color themes, indications for costumes, and show that you are ready to take on the set design challenge. You should also be able to discuss set design very fully at an interview, so do your online homework and be aware of important trends.
